That is precisely where its strength lies. Sooner or later, viewers will recognize a part of themselves in it, however fiercely they may resist. It also has lines that have long since entered common usage, which is always a good sign for a Czech film.

The film handles this idea creatively and, for its time, very well. It is not a perfect work, but it has one enormous advantage: viewers do not forget it as soon as the credits roll.

It does not rely on straightforward storytelling. The scenes are arranged so that the viewer is lost for a while, but then the pieces begin to fall into place. The author particularly likes that exact moment of realization.

For the author, this is the best of the five. He has seen it several times and has yet to tire of it. It contains everything he values in a film:

• a powerful idea,
• excellent acting,
• emotion without embarrassment,
• visual inventiveness,
• and the rare sense that the creator genuinely knew what he wanted to say.

Mr. Nobody is a film about choice, time, possible lives, and the absurd fragility of the points at which decisions are made. It is not entirely easy viewing, but it richly rewards close attention.

Because it is not merely a story. It is more like a mosaic of human possibilities, nostalgia, fear, humor, and existential chaos. Surprisingly, it all holds together.

This is exactly the kind of experience that does not leave viewers thinking, "Yeah, that was good," but rather, "Damn, I need to let this run through my head again."

The author's preferences can be summed up in one sentence:

He prefers films that nudge viewers into thinking over films that merely entertain them loudly for two hours.

That does not mean action films or lighter fare have no value. They do. But every so often, it is good to watch something with structure, soul, and a little courage of its own.
